First Things First. Or Not?
First Things First. Or Not?
Candice Ng, 2018
A design reader is not a new idea. Many have walked before us in compiling texts and it has always been rewarding to learn from the curated knowledge and reflections of different individuals. And while we keep at learning, this first attempt in compiling one of our own, hopes to join the efforts of many to continue thinking and making more accountably in the ever growing complexity of design.
This effort is not exempt from its own shortcomings. As a first, it is definitely not exhaustive and we hope to continue adding more discussions, debates and counterpoints as it grows. On this note, we will work towards expanding both online and offline reader in a future series and add to these investigations thematically. For now, we've included some expanded readings here on the First Things First manifesto and its discussions. If you're interested to go deeper, do head on over.
No design is apolitical, whether one is conscious of it or not; and while the textual nature of these readings can seem to sometimes over-theorise design, it is never our intention to be so. We hope that the act of thinking critically through text can begin as a stepping stone to action and to forming one's own values and beliefs in design, shaping our ethics and morality as we grow in maturity.
Thank you for already taking time.
