Preface
Social Design Reader
Candice Ng
The Social Design reader series delves into the intricate nature of the 'social' and its diverse manifestations and permutations within the domain of design. While design is often perceived as a driving force for positive change or effective problem-solving, such endeavors frequently prioritize immediate objectives without due consideration for the enduring consequences and issues stemming from design interventions.

Through discussions and readings in class, students engage in a critical examination of their well-meaning intentions, concurrently reflecting on the actualities of what constitutes 'good' design within broader society. Design is neither a band-aid nor a field of practice to be wielded by hegemonic powers as a means to deflect responsibilities that have been neglected by nations and states.

We invite you to explore the compilation of texts meticulously curated by students, to further reflect on these nuanced considerations.
